AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY’S RELAY FOR LIFE
Continuing the Fight Against Cancer Despite Sluggish Economy
(EUGENE, OR.) — Although the impeding economy has financially impacted most businesses and organizations, the American Cancer Society has successfully overcome difficult fundraising challenges. Last year the local American Cancer Society’s largest fundraiser, Relay for Life of Eugene/Springfield, won back-to-back national awards: placing sixth in the nation for money raised per capita, and tenth in the nation for the total amount of net income raised for the event. Last year, Relay for Life raised $405 million nationwide, an 8.2 percent increase from the year before.
This year’s economy will pose continual fundraising challenges for Relay for Life, but historically, the American Cancer Society has remained strong through economic uncertainty. Cancer does not disappear in times of recession and the American Cancer Society will continue to remain committed to its mission: fighting cancer.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Eugene/Springfield will take place July 24- 25th from noon to noon at Lane Community College. 2009 is special year for the American Cancer Society because it marks the 25th Anniversary of Relay For Life. Teams are encouraged to sign up and attend the Team Kickoff event on Feb.15th, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Valley River Inn. Teams can also log onto esrfl.org for more information.
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s largest yearly fundraising event. Relay For Life is an overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs.
